Review of The Piano (1993) by Christopher S — 24 Mar 2011
One of the most underrated films I have ever seen. I was not as aware of the culture of New Zealand prior to this film but now I am more knowledgeable about colonial New Zealand, whose story often gets overshadowed by colonial Australia.
The script by Jane Campion was superb as was her directing. If it was not for Schindler's List, Campion would have been the first woman to win the Best Director award. However, out of many strong points of the film, the strongest points were the acting and the rich lush scenery of New Zealand.
Holly Hunter is hugely underrated and she gave one of the 10 best performances in the last 25 years. Anna Paquin was also excellent as was Sam Neill. Definitely haunting film but excellently done.
