Review of The Pianist (2002) by Sam S — 31 Aug 2012
A masterpiece, yes it's slow, yes it's rather long, but it's a brilliantly subtle piece of film making, fantastically acted and written. Comparisons with Schindler's list are of course inevitable but this does The Pianist a disservice, whilst Spielberg's film is hardly bad it's sentimentalism and manipulation hurt it, and both are completely different films.
Unlike most films little music is used, even during the moments were terrible atrocities are committed making these scenes all the more shocking. Adrien Brody is brilliant in the film but he is hardly the only one, his cynical ironic brother is another highlight acting-wise, and all the characters are amazing, this film is one of the best films I have ever seen.
