Review of The Pianist (2002) by Kyle M — 19 Sep 2014
This is my first try with Polanski and his direction was spot on. The whole movie I was thinking this had a 70's movie's style to it. Turns out, I was right. It was that style mixed with the historical context at hand and modern day film tech that pieced together a bit of a nostalgic timeline, even though I'm not sure that makes sense.
It was a beautiful movie, though I wasn't as impressed with Adrien Brody as everyone else, and I thought the movie's pace slowed for little to no reason. I get that he was all alone, but I don't understand why you need to drag the movie out in order to identify with it.
It's one thing to exploit or be provocative in order to make someone uncomfortable; it's another thing to be boring in order to make someone uncomfortable. Maybe Polanski thought he wouldn't win any awards if the movie was less than 150 minutes.
Maybe he's right. I really liked the movie as a whole though. It was very moving on more than one occasion.
