Review of The Pianist (2002) by Jean Carlos T — 23 Feb 2011
One of the best WWII movies I've seen. One of the best Polanski movies ever.
The Pianist tells the true story of the pianist Władysław Szpilman, who survived the WWII. This is a great movie, well-acted, well directed, well written. Is sometimes hard to see, this movies put you into the WWII, sometimes is hard to believe he survived or that is a true story. There's no other movie of any war that can make it better than The Pianist. I saw Schindler's List and I liked it... A LOT, but is not just as great as The Pianist is.
Adrien Brody, was an unknown actor for me (I still can't even remember his name sometimes), I thought he didn't deserve the Oscar for Best Actor just beacause he played a pianist that survived the WWII, for me he didn't deserve any award, but then I saw the movie, he was simply amazing. I thought the movie was even worst than him. How wrong I was! This movie turned out to be in my top ten movies.
Roman Polanski's directing is superb. I was completely lost in the movie (lost in a good way). Some parts where Schindler's List has it wrong (like the lenght), this movie makes it right. The visual effects are great too, I saw the movie with my cousin and he thought that all the destroyed buildings, in one scene, were real and they looked real. Only a genius director can fool people like that. If Polanski wouldn't have been the director, this movie wouldn't have a chance to be as good as it is.
The screenplay was smart, intense, beautiful, sad. The movie, without this screenplay, would be NOTHING even with Polanski on direction.
This is a movie to be admired and remembered for ever.
