Review of The Philadelphia Story (1940) by Todd D — 17 Sep 2010
This romantic comedy is very differente from all the other romantic comedies I've ever seen. The comedy part doesn't come from funny dialogues, doesn't come from physical comedy either... it's all about the character's actions, thoughts and feelings.
It isn't dark humor either, it's just an almost imposible to describe style of comedy... because it doesn't make you laugh out loud (except the opening scene), it just make you smile a lot of times, a very elegant humor.
So, from that point of view, this film is more romantic than comedy, and it all does it brilliantly... the story is very simple but there are some scenes that'll keep in your memory. James Stewart (in his best comedy role.
.. his character is the one who makes you smile the most) and Katharine Hepburn... they are the reason that makes this film so great in a lot of aspects, and so classic. Cary Grant is good too, but Stewart steals the show.
It's not one of my favorite romantic comedies, but still is a very good film... not as good as I expected (the ending was too fast and well, it doesn't fit very well with the rest of the film) but it's still good.
