Review of The Philadelphia Story (1940) by Kenneth D — 13 Sep 2008
You cannot get any better than this for superb acting and amazing writing. Cary Grant, James Stewart and Katharine are, respectively, the three greatest actors to have ever lived. You cannot find better.
..and here they are together for, what may very well be, one of the most famous storylines in history. It was remade into a successful musical starring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Grace Kelly in 1956 (Grace Kelly's last picture before retiring at a young age to become Princess of Monaco).
But back to 1940. James Stewart (or Jimmy as he was called, but never billed) won his only Acadmey Award for his role as magazine writer Mike McCaulley. Cary Grant is at his most sarcastic and funniest.
Katherine Hepburn owns her role (literally, as it was written for her, specifically). Still one of the funniest scenes in all of film, the late-night chat between Stewart and Grant, over a couple glasses of hard liquor, should have the viewer in stitches.
Highly recommended!
