Review of The Phenom (2016) by Tim M — 29 Sep 2016
There are moments in "The Phenom" that are great and they have nothing to do with baseball. The baseball parts are written by a guy who was never around baseball or if he was he must not have been paying attention. Ethan Hawke plays the father of the phenom (Johnny Simmons) and the moments with those two feel real. Most other scenes appear shoehorned in order to fill up space and time. And don't expect to see a lot of Paul Giamatti who gets star billing only to be witnessed in a handful of scenes. That right there is probably enough to tick a lot of people off.
How can there be so little attention to detail in the baseball parts. Really a professional game that has an umpire with shin guards OUTSIDE his pants.... If you want to be taken seriously as a filmmaker then you have to treat your audience with respect. Hawke and Giamatti pull this trash up a little, but not much.
