Review of The Phantom Wagon (1939) by Andrew B — 24 Jul 2011
Victor Sjostrom's "The Phantom Carriage" is a spooky morality tale about the fabled carriage of death that escorts the dead to the underworld. Sjostrom's mise-en-scene has an almost modern feel to it, probably because he was one of Sweden's most influential filmmakers.
The transparent appearance of the phantom carriage and its woebegone driver are well accomplished with nifty editing effects.
