Review of Revenge (2017) by Andrew B — 12 Jun 2018
It does not break genre tropes. This is poor black comedy level torture porn. It is slightly funny in how outlandish it is. But it's the same story of sexy promiscuous girl gets raped and then brutally murders her assailants.
It is extremely cliche but that's where it works well in finding a slightly original take on these tropes by making them almost comical. The smallest of injuries are the most squeamish, the deaths are mostly fortunate.
None of the characters show any realistic likable qualities. How is this affirmative feminism if it shows a should be dead heroine take psychadelics and then bumble her way to killing the protagonists.
Feminine leads are what this horrid genre is all about, but none work well from a 'women rule' standpoint except killbill which transcends a few genres anyway. Similar to deathproof but wi th out the style, flair or character development.
It is beautifully shot but every scene can be seen a mile away. Tension is decent and it doesn't directly tell the viewer the plot but it's easily read. It was a struggle to watch and keep interest even with a beautiful lead, shock gore and minor black comedy.
The shallows is a similar film for people who can turn off their minds at will and stand to be fed shit.
