Review of The Phantom of the Opera (2004) by Baurushan J — 11 Sep 2011
This movie has Gerard Butler as the title character, Emmy Rossum as Christine and Patrick Wilson as Raoul not to mention this a remake of the classic old fashioned musical thriller/horror from 1925? THERE IS NO FUCKING REASON TO HATE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!! Ok let me clear the "fans hating business" out of the way and talk about all the good things in this film.
The singing is absolutely epic that it feels relaxing as if you want to go and see a real musical play/opera. Joel Schumacher has stepped a long way from Batman and Robin and started to make Oscar-worthy movies but hell at least in Batman and Robin, he tried to deliver something good and it wasn't even Joel's fault for the movie to suck.
Gerard Butler was the perfect choice for The Phantom and he was badass. The scene where Christine takes off his mask and we see his real face was a great jumpscare to the audience and I liked that. This isn't like those Paranormal Activity movies or A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) films where the jumpscare is repeated to try and sound spooky.
Once is good because it's unexpected especially in a movie that goes smooth or scares the audience with tension. This is how a horror movie works. The sword fight between Butler and Wilson was bravo! and I can see why this film has won three Oscars I think.
Emmy Rossum was the perfect choice for Christine. She sang looked and acted beautifully the whole way through. She embodied her character perfectly even though she was only 18 then and Patrick Wilson plays that kind of guy who looks like the handsome-hero-on-the-horse-with-the-long-hair guy you see in the olden days.
So yeah if you're looking for an epic stage musical set in the olden times around late 1800s-early 1900s, then this is your movie. Finally I will say that I will give this film a 10/10 only to defend this film and to stop people from hating it.
(to be honest if I was hater of this film; well, it's kind of hard not to hate it anyway).
