Review of The Phantom of the Opera (2004) by Chanel M — 23 Oct 2013
Joel Schumacher's adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular stage production has all the visual pop and style that you'd expect from the director, but the film is unnecessarily overlong and suffers from a miscast Gerard Butler in the central role; his duet with the lovely, porcelain-esque Emmy Rossum of the signature title track lacks the power to be the show-stopper the material requires.
Stunning supporting performances from Patrick Wilson, Simon Callow, Miranda Richardson and a scene-stealing Minnie Driver help flesh out this particular tale that has flashes of sheer inspiration, but otherwise misses the mark.
