A well-orchestrated horror opus filled with awe-inspring visual effects and set designs- and Lon Chaney. Chaney gets all monstered up in some of the best cinematic make-up of the silent era or any other.

The expansive sets within the opera and down below it have premonitions of expressionism, and some of the best scenes are long shots in which the scenery absolutely swallows the players. Spooky, excellently produced and featuring a great Chaney performance, this is an essential.
