Review of The Phantom of the Opera (1925) by Ryan V — 27 Feb 2012
One of the most visually striking films of the silent era, the 1925 adaptation of Gaston Leroux's novel is arguably the best version to hit the silver screen. Lon Chaney plays the Opera Ghost with a gripping mixture of pitiful heartache and sinister menace.
His powerful performance is complemented by lavish sets, huge production values, and a professional level of cinematography that can still stir the viewer's soul even in the present day.
