Review of The Petrified Forest (1973) by Adrienne L — 15 Apr 2009
This is where Bogart got his first big break as a heavy in Hollywood. Thanks to Leslie Howard who suggested Bogart play in this film version of the stage play they both were known for at the time. The film isnt very long and the story is straightforward.
Its held together by interesting dialogue exchanges particularly from Howards vagabond character of lost hopes and dreams. We have a very young Bette Davis as well who does good but her character wasnt as complex as the legendary performances she would give for years after this film was made.
The Petrified Forest serves as a nice contrast for Davis and Bogarts careers. Great acting from all members of the cast makes up for lack of scene variety.
