Un film piuttosto duro, insolito, tutto ambientato in un deserto ricostruito in studio. Personaggi senza troppe sfumature, bravissimi attori. Bello il contrasto tra il poeta squattrinato d'animo nobile-Leslie Howard e il lucido killer spietato-Humphrey Bogart (al suo primo ruolo importante).
