Review of The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012) by Dan L — 20 Dec 2015
I recently rewatched this movie, still 5 stars. Very good portrayal of high school. Love all the characters. Made me cry all throughout, and related very much to the protagonist. This is like a redemption story for the shy/awkward kids who didn't fit in in high school but really, really wanted to -- and noticed what everyone else was doing, from the sidelines. It's a beautiful movie in that respect, now one of my all-time favorites.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I enjoyed THE CRAP out of this movie, no joke! I had read the book when I was a teenager, so I knew what to expect: dialogue that sounds like real teenager speak, a story about a loner who struggles to find friends and acceptance, and a crazy ride along the way. I was not disappointed, and I remember walking away thinking that the main protagonist really nailed his role. He did a great job of portraying a somewhat crazy person trying against all odds to hold it together for just one more day. It's a tense movie about misfits, and that's nothing new, but what it attempts to do it does very, very well. If you like movies set in high school or movies about outcasts, I think you're bound to love "The Perks...".
