Review of The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) by Matthew H — 23 Aug 2014
For the first half, it entertainingly depicts Larry Flynt's struggles when his "obscene" pornographic publications meets persistent moral opposition, resulting in a series of legal battles over the interpretation of the first amendment.
To its detriment, it loses focus of the interesting legal and moral discussion, instead deciding to highlight his psychiatric deterioration and increasingly odd behaviour. It finds its feet again at the end but the drop in quality in the third quarter significantly affected my overall enjoyment.
Nonetheless, it is a well told and well acted biographical film which at times can be truly thought-provoking.
