Review of The People vs. George Lucas (2010) by Bryan T — 08 May 2011
The 3 star rating is only for Star Wars fans. All others can knock off a star.
An enjoyable look at Star Wars creator George Lucas from the perspective of his fan base. Lots of fun clips and neat quotes from talented creative people fill out this fairly even handed look at the fans' disappointment to the changes Lucas made to his original SW trilogy, and with his newer trilogy.
Truthfully, the film is a bit 'inside baseball' and that will bore a lot of people that are unfamiliar with SF fandom. And many of the commentators in the film overstate things well past the point of absurdity, blunting their point and making it difficult to take them too seriously.
The truth is, George Lucas didn't ruin (or 'rape') anyone's childhood. All those fun memories are yours, and nobody can take them away. I think much of fan angst is rooted in the plain fact that they are not children anymore and just can't ever really revisit that time of their life. No movie will ever give you that same sense of escapist wonder at age 44 as it did when you were 10. Lucas is an easy foil, so run with it.
As for the (over)marketing of the franchise, nobody is forcing anybody to buy toys, masks, costumes, model kids, books, etc. Those with an irrational attraction to that stuff have problems, not the guys selling them.
Well worth a look! I am so glad this film was made. Kudos!
