Review of The People vs. George Lucas (2010) by Todd B — 29 Sep 2012
Although I am positive that sci-fi nerds will certainly enjoy this documentary infinitely more than people who aren't pigeonholed into that category, 'The People vs. George Lucas' is a hilarious, insightful, and entertaining picture any way you look at it.
The magnifying lens that it takes to arguably the most influential franchise in science fiction is one of both critical scrutiny and loving, fanboy curiosity. TPVGL takes time to interview nearly everybody imaginable, from everyday fans (from many countries and walks of life) to journalists to filmmakers to producers and so on.
Almost no stone is left unturned. TPVGL really takes the effort to fit as much detail as possible into its 90 or so minutes, and strives to be a part of the necessary viewing of the Star Wars universe.
In my opinion, it succeeds. Sure, it probably should have been longer to better suite its detailed coverage and to further analyze the massive body of work that is the galaxy far, far away. (This doc mostly focuses on Lucas's early days, the genesis of Star Wars and its success, the "Special" Editions, the infamous prequels, and recent reactions to Lucas's career.
) In the end though, 'The People' accomplished its unspoken goal to become an integral part of Star Wars, if but a small one.
