Review of The People vs. George Lucas (2010) by Tom M — 02 Jun 2012
If youâ(TM)re upset that Han no longer shoots first or that The Force is now a blood parasite, then âThe People vs. George Lucasâ? is a movie for you! Although really, any Star Wars fan would appreciate and enjoy this documentary.
The film presents a pretty fair look at the âLucas raped my childhoodâ? theme shouted by many fans of the original Star Wars trilogy and their offense at the recent and odd changes that George Lucas made to his precious creations. It also manages to find an audience for the recent films and even finds some fans of Jar-Jar Binks! So the film does work hard to find balance.
Along with the rants, rage and arguments presented, the movie is a homage to the true passion the films inspired in fans and the creativity that blossomed in the form of endless fan-made tributes, spoofs and even film recuts passed around by fans.
Tons of interviews with fans and pros talking about their sides in the argument and the influence the films and George Lucas had in their lives drives the point home that this is truly a unique bunch rallied around these films like no other group of devoted fans. Many love George but hate what heâ(TM)s become; going from rebel film-maker to shameless bloated capitalist. And George seems to agree with them!
The film is a must-see documentary for any Star Wars fan. Why, it even covers the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special to make itâ(TM)s point that even Lucas is a deeply flawed human being at times! But anyone interested in the study of geek culture will get a lot from the movie and its documentation of the genre film fan experience...And the next generation of Star Wars fans coming up behind us.
