Review of The People Under the Stairs (1991) by Drew S — 06 Aug 2007
The People Under the Stairs is probably Wes Craven's first legitimately decent movie. He still had a little improvement to do before he hit his magnum opus (Scream), but this movie marks some newfound directorial abilities such as getting good performances out of his actors. There are still some occasional glitches to be seen, like a blatantly obvious goof where a fire poker snaps in two like a twig, and the plot is almost too ridiculous to work.
This is no masterpiece, nor is it particularly scary, but it's fun nonetheless. Fluffy black-comedy horror.
