Review of The Pawnbroker (1965) by Libby T — 10 Nov 2005
Bleak, realistic and certainly not a cheery feel good movie. But it is very compelling. Superbly directed by Sidney Lumet. The entire cast is great, but Rod Steiger's performance is absolutely brilliant.
How Lee marvin won the Oscar for Cat Ballou over Steiger's performance is one of those Academy Award bizarre mistakes. Nice black and white photography, excellent writing and very well edited.
