Review of The Passion of the Christ (2004) by Paul E — 26 Sep 2013
The Passion story is moving enough without adding in sadomasochistic elements that were never in the original Gospels. There were people in the audience crying and praying after seeing this film. Does that make it an effective film? For some people, I guess.
For myself, I only felt red-hot anger at all of the sickening emotional manipulation. This movie may have touched a lot of people, but not in a good way. Mel Gibson also made a lot of money off of this movie, but in the process he cheapened the Gospel story by reducing it to a bloodbath.
I feel like he exploited the faith of a lot of people.
