Review of The Passion of the Christ (2004) by Andrew A — 13 Oct 2015
4/4 stars. If you're not religious, don't be reviewing this movie! I'm done hearing this crap about "cinema is not Church" and that stuff. All these people are saying this film "doesn't matter" and is "Christian torture porn." Honestly, I'm sick and tired of it!
Anyways, back to the movie. It is an experience, not a movie. Roger Ebert said it was the most violent movie he'd ever seen. I can agree. This film makes you feel Jesus' pain it is so graphic. Almost everyone I know who's seen it involuntarily cried with pain and sympathy, including me. Of course, it is not the most biblically accurate film in history, nor is it very fond of the Jews or Roman Soldiers. But this film is not a blame game. It's main focus is on how the savior of the entire world is being tortured and killed by the same people he's saving. When he looks to the sky and says "Lord, forgive them. They know not what they do.", it is a deeply profound experience. A man who's been through so much pain is still forgiving. That's a powerful image, one of many the film has to offer.
I'm one of the only two people in my entire grade to have watched this movie from beginning to end the first time I saw it. It's mistakes are forgivable because of its impact and it's great acting. If you are not Christian, then don't waste your time with something you won't even care about. If you are Christian, this film will hurt. Enter at your own risk.
