Review of The Party (1968) by Thierry B — 06 Jan 2008
I always heard Peter Sellers as a humour god, and as one of the funniest actor of all-time. According to what I?ve read, to my parents and to his reputation, I thought I should give him a chance to make me laugh because I wanted myself to have an idea about the guy: funny or not?
Peter Sellers is Hrundi V. Bakshi, a bumbling Indian actor who gets accidentally invited to a little party. At this moment, The Party becomes a very simple movie : a bumbling man brings misadventure to the guests. Peter Sellers totally steals the show, his visual gags are amazing, his Indian accent is hilarious but it stops here. The Party is a repetitive slapstick festival in which there is nothing else than Peter Sellers ability to make people laugh. Oh, and there is a beautiful song written by the ?always good? Henry Mancini. And then, at the end the party is a mess, it ends with twenty not-invited guests and an elephant taking a bath in the pool? Add to this the Fellini-esque finale where everybody is singing and dancing for no reason. At this moment, we are happy that the movie is ending.
