Review of The Parallax View (1974) by Ian M — 08 Apr 2010
It's hard to fathom how a film this dark ever came out of the Hollywood studio system. As political conspiracy thrillers go, The Parallax View is as tense, claustrophobic and nightmarishly plausible as 1974's other classic, The Conversation.
Of Pakula's great paranoia trilogy (the others being Klute and All the President's Men), it was initially my least favourite, but on a second viewing I think it's actually the best of the lot.
Beatty makes a compelling flawed hero, and every frame is a brilliantly Kafkaesque manipulation of light, space, design and camera placement.
