Review of The Paradise Suite (2015) by Tor M — 21 Jul 2016
Multinarrative film with six parallel stories - all of them is connected to Amsterdam. We also visit Sofia and other stories gives os short glimses of other cities or other parts of the Netherlands. The production is casted by Swedish, Dutch, Swedish, Bulgarian and Yugoslavian actors. The leads are heading different stories but some of them, not surprizingly, get's connected with the other stories. All of them are quite bleak. Some bleaker than others. Human trafficing, loss of children, personal crises and illegal immigration are all topics here. Some very strong scenes, including rape and murder are putting a grip on you, well supported by powerful music. Great acting and great camera shots completes the techincal parts. It's pace is great and it's not a boring second here - I didn't want it to slow down or end at times, that's a solid sign of satisfyment.
I liked this film a whole lot. It's a fresh take on the style of multinarrative presentation and even if I have seen this type of presentation better exicuted several times before, it's still solid and it never really try to be the most important thing with the film anyhow. I like almost every single one of the stories, but the ones with the model, the gangster, the immigrant and the piano-child are mye favorites.
A very strong second feature and a very good film that will be remembered as a rugged and tragic film focusing on the dark sides of Amsterdam.
8.5 out of 10 street ramps.
