Review of The Palm Beach Story (1942) by Craig F — 07 Apr 2008
A trifle in every possible sense of the word, The Palm Beach Story is still one of the funniest films to ever spring from Hollywood's loins; this is Preston Sturges at the height of his powers.
Everybody expects Joel McCrea to be awesome. The surprise comes from the two brilliant supporting actors; Mary Astor is a scream every time she opens her mouth, and Rudy Vallee, of all people, shows a charm and knack for light comedy you probably didn't know he had.
Sturges is having fun with narrative here, as well. Gotta love the opening sequence; we begin, essentially, during the madcap finale of some other wacky comedy we don't get to see. Wild.
