Review of The Pajama Game (1957) by Zoran S — 13 Jan 2010
This is a fascinatingly flawed and cracked film. It attempts to marry progressive labor politics with the classical Hollywood ideologies of love and romantic closure. The songs are well staged and some have more in common with, for example, Miklos Jancso's Red Psalm in their theatrical spatialized expressions of group identities and conflicts rather than other 50's Hollywood musicals.
I don't want to oversell its radicalness but for 1957 this is compelling stuff. "Steam Heat" is an amazing number. The knife-thrower is amusing too.
