Review of The Page Turner (2006) by Robert B — 11 Jul 2007
Only the French would craft a revenge film like this. I highly enjoyed this one.
The art of subtlety and gentle manipulation is perfectly captured in this film.
The movie opens with young Melanie practicing (and eventually performing) for an important piano audition. An inconsiderate judge interrupts and inadvertantly sabotages her performance. Cut to 10 years later and Melanie re-enters the life of this inconsiderate judge.
The film is slow moving with a constant tone of impending dread. At every turn you are waiting for Melanie to enact some kind of revenge on Ariane. The end result is a mix of obvious and unexpected. Great performances and wonderful direction make this film stand out from the many French dramas that come out each year.
Highly recommended.
