Review of The Oxford Murders (2008) by Hm F — 12 Feb 2011
Interesting premise is completely undone by haphazard storytelling and some serious miscasting with Elijah Wood as the main star. Only John Hurt manages to save this movie with a scenery-chewing performance that sucks the air out of the room whenever he's present.
Wood nor anyone else has a chance of being noticed when Hurt is onscreen, which might be for the best as only Hurt can pull off the nonsense script. No one can pay me to believe Leonor Watling or Julie Cox would fall in lust for Hobbit-boy Wood; its miscasting pure and simple.
Character and their motivations change come and go with no seeming relation to each other. Roger Ebert's Rule of the underused big star goes a long way here to guess who the killer is..or at least one of them.
..see this movie supposes..well, never mind. My suggestion is to read the book and ignore this movie at all costs.
