Review of The Owl and the Pussycat (1970) by Alan W — 22 Mar 2008
This is actually an entirely enjoyable adaptation of the stage play! It may not be as edgy as the original (in which the two leads were played by a white man and a black woman, which, in the seventies, made it edgy from the onset). And while Streisand is not the first person you would think of as a low class hooker, she is funny and endearing. I do think that the movie might have benefitted from some more thoughtful casting - it can get distracting, paying less attention to the characte of Doris and paying more attention to Barbra's kooky mugging. I DO like this movie and I DO like the performances; I just think it might have been more interesting with Pam Grier and Tony Roberts.
Nevertheless, I like the film making, the performances and I LOOOOOVE seeing New York in the seventies.
