Review of The Overnight (2015) by Adrian S — 26 Sep 2015
Fresh from subverting the horror genre with the midnight cult hit Creep, director Patrick Brice again gallantly shatters the conventions of the adult comedy genre by offering an abrasively-probing look beneath the deceptive veneer of marriage.
In typical mumblecore mode, The Overnight is a thoroughly-adult thriller-comedy that has a queasy aftertaste, but bracingly delves into a plethora of provocative themes pertaining to polygamy, male ego, deviant sexual fantasies and bisexualism.
Although the pat ending doesn't live up to the riveting (and disturbing) buildup, Brice offers plenty of black humour and ahem, 'milks' (pun intended) a lot of sexual tension from the proceedings.
A testimony that a film can go a long way even with low budget, as long as the script is solid. Strictly not for kids, or adults with a kid appetite.
