Review of The Outsiders (1983) by Tommy M — 08 May 2010
Let me start by saying I LOVE the book this movie goes to. I have been a fan of the book since 5th grade! So I was hyped as hell to see this! Anyway, this movie takes place in 1967 Oklahoma were the gang rivalry between 'Greasers' low class kids and 'Socs' high class kids rages on tough. We follow the story of 14 year old greaser, Ponyboy Curtis [played by C. Thomas Howell]. Along with our main character we have a large cast of greasers, all played by great stars. These include Ponyboy's brothers, Darry and Sodapop Curtis [played by Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe respctivally, may Swayze's soul rest in peace], the gang's timid 'pet' Johnny Cade, [played by Ralph Macchio, who I know as the Karate Kid], the big time smooth criminal, Dallas Winston, aka Dally [played by Matt Dillion], the grease monkey and car expert, Steve Randall, [played by Tom Cruise] and the jokester, Keith Matthews, aka Two-Bit, [played by Emilio Estevez]. There's also Tim Shepard, the leader of a totally differant plane of greasers [played by Glenn Withrow]. The film starts with Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally seeing a movie together. When Ponyboy is home late his older brother Darry [who parents Ponyboy beacuse of their parent's recent death] scolds him for it. After a long argument, Darry loses his temper and smacks Ponyboy. As a result, Ponyboy runs away from home, accomponied by Johnny. While on their trip, they come across a gang of drunk, violent socs, wanting to beat them up, most notably their leader, Robert Sheldon, aka Bob [played by Leif Garret]. after the socs beat Ponyboy, he blacks out. When he wakes up, he finds Bob dead by Johnny's hand [maybe he used some KARATE from his karate kid filming..., nah im just kidding he just stabs him with a switchblade.] The boys go to Dally for help. I'm not gonna spoil anymore. If you haven'y seen this yet, check it out!
FUN FACT: At one scene in the hospital, the author of the origional book, SE Hinton, plays a nurse.
