Review of The Outsiders (1983) by Jessi D — 26 Nov 2012
The cast of young men (Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez and Glenn Withrow) do an impeccable job in this decidedly dark and off-the-wall teenagers-on-the-run flick.
Diane Lane makes a commendable turn as Soc girlfriend Sherri Valance, also known as Cherry. It's a little messy at times, but the film still has relevance for its acclaimed and true-to-life storytelling.
Macchio's performance as Johnny Cade from a broken household, then on the run from the law with Ponyboy after he stabbed and killed a Soc who was assaulting his friend, to his wincing from his injuries sustained after trying to save kids from a burning church (including dying plea to Ponyboy to "stay gold") is the standout amongst the then-up and coming cast.
