Review of The Outsiders (1983) by Dusty L — 07 Apr 2015
An honest portrait of a coming-of-age story that takes risks. Initially upon release this movie was slammed. Years later it has become clear that the critics were unnecessarily harsh. It has aged well, especially considering it's become such a time capsule film.
I have an affection towards the movie because I grew up with it and read the book in school. One can tell its author is a woman because there is a sensitivity that is quite beautiful and unusual, especially with a cast of almost all young men.
Coppola's director's cut improves it and thanks to a remarkable casting director we end up with a stellar cast who shockingly would all go on to become hugely famous. There are some genuinely moving moments and despite the film's flaws there is a certain nostalgic quality that transcends its roots.
Weirdly, it's almost magical at times.
