I grew up on Westerns--"Gunsmoke", "Bonanza"--& when I saw this what blew me away @ the time wuz the avante-garde directon--the extreme close ups of contorted & chiseled faces, c/u's of .45 revolvers blowing bad people away, the lighting, Gattling gun mowing soldiers down--this was the mid 70's mind you!! I never knew it wuz Eastwood until yrs. later...
Anyway, Eastwood as Josey Wales in post Civil War Texas (I think) who was being chased by renegade Union soldiers and almost comically, every gunslinger West of the Miss.--and who Eastwood characteristically shot 'em all down like the dogs they are then would spit on the corpse!! Try doing THAT in today's movies!! Hilarious irreverence!
