A very different kind of western for Eastwood and definitely one of his best efforts, both in the genre and as a director. Unlike many of his previous westerns, Eastwood's character has a name...and actual emotions! Set against an extremely effective civil war backdrop, Josey Wales isn't a gunslinger come out of retirement, but a grieving man trying to find a balance between revenge and peace.

Eastwood gives one of his best performances and is already showing what amazing talent he has as a director. He keeps everything moving at a quick pace, piles on the suspense and action, doesn't forget the lighter moments, and most importantly, treats the characters and situations with intelligence.

Those looking for something a little different from Eastwood's spaghetti westerns should put this at the top of their list.
