Review of The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) by Paul Z — 02 May 2012
The residue of war is refractory and widespread in Clint Eastwood's brooding, grandiose revisionist western. What's impressive is just how wide a compass of feeling he brings without compromising his fabled efficiency of gesture, or reaching beyond his uber-masculine monotone grumble.
There's delight to be found in the accumulating gallery of characters, the saucy humor and the bushwhacking, bounty hunting and stand-offs against the expanse of frontier landscape.
