Review of The Outlaw (1943) by Lewis M — 18 Mar 2009
Most people remember this as the movie with Jane Russell's big titties, but it deserves more credit. Even though Howard Hughes is credited as director, we are told that Howard Hawks in fact directed most of it.
The cast is headed by Walter Huston as Doc Holliday and Thomas Mitchell as Pat Garrett, who are both first rate, although Jack Buetel is miscast as Billy the Kid. As a historical document, it's largely fictionalized and almost worthless (the movie claims that Pat Garrett killed Doc Holliday instead of Billy the Kid) but as filmmaking, it works.
The scene where Doc Holliday shoots off Billy the Kid's ear lobes is unforgettable.
