Review of The Others (2001) by Slavisa M — 04 Jul 2013
With an eerie tone and incredibly disquieting performance from Nicole Kidman, "The Others" relies on old-fashioned scares - whispering voices, thumping floorboards, doors closing on their own - to create a spine-tingling good thriller. Grace (Nicole Kidman) is a devout Christian with photosensitive children. Frightening events occur in their curtained house after three new helpers arrive, which leads Grace on a hunt to discover the cause.
What's great about "The Others" is that it doesn't rely on special effects and blood and gore to be creepy. It has a chilling score, a well written and tragic story, and enough jumps and twists to keep you on the edge of your seat, even once you know what's happening. This movie is probably too frightening for children, but content wise there's only a brief sensual scene between Grace and her husband that ends with a glimpse of her bare back. "The Others" is how scary movies should be made: dark, intelligent, and spooky.
