Review of The Omen (1976) by Matthew R — 17 Aug 2013
Ok, 1976 - I'm constantly surprised at how great some of the films from this era were. The acting is great, it unfolds well, it doesn't watch like a horror film, but it's still firmly in that area. I can see why the 06/06/06 remake changed it so little.
But as good as the film was on it's own merits, you have to understand how much this film changed history. This film got Fox Studios out of debt and gave them the money to do Star Wars in '77. And think how much money that made. No Omen? No Star Wars? No Fox Studios. No The Simpsons. No Alien. No Aliens. And no countless thousands of things influenced by these films. Today's cinema and television owe a lot to this film, and not just because of the influence it had as a piece of art.
And the latest remastered Blu-ray version looks and sounds fantastic. It even rivals films made 30 years after it.
