Review of The Omega Man (1971) by Robert F — 23 Jul 2010
The Omega Man (1971) -- [6.5] -- What if the last man on Earth was also the worst actor? I jest... a little. But Heston is fun to watch even if his deliveries are often forced or stilted. "The Omega Man" is based on Richard Matheson's revered novel, "I Am Legend," which has two other film incarnations, 1964's "Last Man on Earth" starring Vincent Price, and 2007's "I Am Legend," starring Will Smith.
I think "The Omega Man" is the best of the adaptations, though Price's version would be a close second. "Omega Man" creates a palpable atmosphere of isolation and loneliness, but the decision to turn Matheson's vampires into some sort of religious leper colony keeps me from fully embracing the film.
Love the score by Ron Grainer.
