Review of The Odd Couple II (1998) by Dave H — 10 Sep 2010
Much better than expected. I mean - the plot is totally rote (isn't it almost exactly the same as the Grumpy Old Men sequel?), but the crusty leads are the entire show - and the chemistry between these two awesome dudes is still there.
Matthau (one of my favourite actors ever!) has looked 70 since he was 30, and his comic timing seems to have improved, if possible - and he's especially awesome with his droll one-liners. This sequel (one for the record books - the longest period between original and sequel with the original actors) might have seemed pointless on paper, but on film, the humour and heart lift it almost as high as the first.
A really sweet coda on a great 30 year partnership.
