Review of The Odd Couple (1968) by Anthony S — 24 Jul 2005
Once apon a time there was a handsome young man, named Tom, and a beautiful young lady, named Michelle, and they were together and things were good. It was time to go off to college for them and a problem arose. Tom wanted to go far away to college and Michelle wanted to stay at home for college. The two were very sad about what they were going to have to do. Tom was going to go far away and forget about her, Michelle thought. When the time came, it was mostly Tom's idea that they break up. Michelle was too sad to even think about it but Tom told her it was for the better.
During the months that Tom was away at college Michelle would cry herself to sleep, thinking about what he could be doing over there. She didn't dare tell him how she felt. She didn't want to hold him back from following his dreams. Everytime Tom would get back home for a vacation she would be the first one that was so happy to see him. He was happy to see her but he always delayed seeing her on purpose, he always pushed her away because he felt that she was holding him back. He wanted to be his own person now. He wanted Michelle out of the picture.
The end of the year came and Tom returned home for the summer. Michelle couldn't stop thinking about when was going to be the next time she saw him. He wasn't too thrilled about seeing her though. He wanted her to leave him alone. She was a pest. Although he loved her so much, he felt that something had died in their relationship a long time ago. Over the course of two months, they saw eachother three times. Both of them were miserable but their lack of communication continued until the day Michelle moved on.
You see, over the few months before Tom had returned for the summer, Michelle had befriended a young man that was in one of her college classes. He took quite a liking to her and she thought he was a very nice gentlemen. Although she wasn't sure about being with him, and would much more prefer Tom, she tried her best to like this new guy. She felt that maybe if she moved on things would be better. Eventually, he asked her out and she accepted. The two hit it off like any other couple just starting a relationship. They talked on the phone all the time and had a great time seeing eachother. Things looked good on Michelle's side.
Until, Tom found out and wasn't pleased. He loved Michelle too much to let such a thing happen. He knew that even though they were miserable as a couple, they were still meant to be. He tried to fight for her back, pleading his case to her, but she would not listen. The truth is she would but she didn't want to go back. She got used to being treated really nice, she hadn't felt that happy in a long time. She wasn't lonely anymore. But her new boyfriend ins ome ways could not match up to Tom. He was too short compared to Tom, he was as unique, and sometimes he just wasn't as fun. He was too normal for her.
Although Tom and Michelle went way back, that even their families were used to eachother, she didn't want to go back. She was afraid. She had no reason to dump the nice lad. He was being great with her. She wasn't going to give up a good thing like that. Michelle was not a quitter. Tom knew she wasn't a quitter but her knew that the other guy would never be able to please her as much as he did in their relationship. He didn't want her to learn the hard way. He tried to save her. Michelle on the other case, was always hiding in her new relationship. You see, people were so used to Tom that they weren't so accepting of her new boyfriend. She avoided certain places, had to lie to people, and had to pretend eveything was alright. She knew that ignoring Tom was wrong, she knew he was her ain true love. She even avoided seeing him because she knew she would fall into his arms right away. She was just too scared to go back to her love.
Michelle never told her family members the truth. The truth about how she had to force a fake existence because she was afraid of being hurt again by Tom. Both Tom's and Michelle's families couldn't stop thinking or mentioning the other. The two of them felt like it was wrong to be apart. They had forged such a special bond with eachother and eachother's families. But Michelle was stubborn, she would ignore the obvious facts, just because she was getting attention from someone. Even when Tom pleased her, looking into eachother's eyes they knew it was meant to be and felt the love. Tom was patient with her and caring, something that is uncommen in men today. But she forgot about it. She ruined them without patience.
Even when Tom tried to talk to her, she would always want to be on the phone with her boyfriend instead. She never took his calls seriously and never prioritized them. He barely got enough solid conversation time. She was being a conceited girl, thinking that she was better off then he was. She completely threw away the past just to feel good with a "guy of the moment." Tom would not have anymore of it. He stopped calling her and trying to contact her. She was being to stubborn and self involved for him. She made it seem like she was a queen sho he had to bow down to. He slammed the phone on the floor and walked away. Not just walking away from the phone, but from Michelle's life too.
Time passed, and Michelle remained with her boyfriend. Tom, extremely heartbroken, never could accept how selfish she was. He continued his studies far away from home. Tom suffered the worst depression in his life because of that woman, but he continued his life. After several years, Tom was married with children and a loving wife.
Michelle ended up alone. She had wanted freedom from Tom and she wanted to try new guys, being monogamous, but it never worked. She took him as a joke and never noticed it until it was too late. She went from boy to boy with no success. Only the street guys wanted to be with her. No one as unique as Tom. When she was ready for a serious relationship, no one was there for her. She thought about her life and how she could've had things differently. If she hadn't abandoned her "family" she would have been happy.
Down the road, Michelle stayed alone for the rest of her life. She just happened to date the wrong guy every time. Her family members spoke about how Tom was good to her and she didn't appreciate it. They wanted their girl to be with a dedicated man like Tom again. They were so sad she made the wrong choices. "I love you." If only she had listened to him when he said those words when he pleaded to her to go back to him.
Although it seemed differently in the beginning, Tom was the lucky one after all. He wished though, that she hadn't had thrown away the relationship just because it was a little banged up.
If only she had listened to her conscience...
THE END.
Commentary: Her tears were the beginning of her understanding what she had done. I miss her dearly, and am deeply saddened I lost the love of my life. I will cry the love for her away over time I guess. I love her so much but never valued her as much as I should have. I love my beautiful hungarian. It is an important story that had to be told. I currently have no plans to get back with her now. I've wasted enough time with that bitch who won't understand. The season finale is coming in just a few days, can't wait! I wonder what the 20th entry is going to be about. As for the beginning of the second season, I am aiming for January or February 2006. Yeah, I know, its a long time from now but that sounds like a good time..
