Review of The Odd Couple (1968) by Richard V — 01 Mar 2009
Sharply written, brillaintly acted. In many ways it betrays its stage play roots, but this works in its favour, creating the claustrophobia which sharpens the comedy. Matthau is often sterotyped as a grump, but quite the opposite, he is, excepting his sadness at the end of his marriage, a louche, life embracing slob.
Lemmon's uptight, buttoned up near neuroses collapses slowly but surely, and the sparks that fly as both men learn to live are great. A gem.
