Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Tony P — 28 Sep 2009
It resembles the style and structure of film noir, only it's about the devil. So while The Ninth Gate fairs well as a mystery, the romanticized, gothic satanism is a bit silly. It's occassionally creepy and intrigueing, but with a sort of laughable entertianment like a fairgrounds haunted house.
If nothing else, Depp is a joy to watch, and Lena Olin is damn sexy. The end is muttled with some mild twists indicated by bombastic music. All in all, an entertaining film, but not what one expects when they hear the name Polanski.
Or Depp, for that matter.
