Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Brad G — 20 May 2009
â??Some Books Are Dangerous.â?? I love that line! The film is all there in that one castoff line. And this is not the action film the theatrical trailer makes it appear to beâ?¦no, this is a slow burning procedural set in and around the bizarre world of occult literature with Johnny Depp turning in a devious performance as the smarmy jerk Book Detective.
Frank Langella pops on some massive thick rimmed glasses and slips and slithers around the edges of the film with evil glee and Emmanuel Seigner shines as the flirty nymph perched on Deppâ??s shoulder.
Plus, stellar character turns from Lena Olin, Barbara Jefford, Jack Taylor, Jose Lopez Rodero, and James Russo. The payoff was a little offputting at first, but it has settled nicely with the dark spots of my nogginâ??.
