Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Alexander Z — 07 Mar 2010
I am one of those who champions The Ninth Gate, a film that seems to be universally panned. I think it's brilliant. The pacing, the mystery, the slow development. The ending is what gets a lot of viewers.
There is no closure. But then, considering how the plot forms, I believe that implying rather than showing was the only recourse Polanski had. It's sad that the screenplay worked itself into a corner like that, but this is one of the few films I will call a flawed masterpiece.
