Review of The Ninth Gate (1999) by Justin M — 22 May 2011
I couldn't for the life of me tell you what actually happens in this movie, though I did enjoy it, to an extent. The finale is just ridiculous, and it would be hard not to laugh at it. Even though the script is dreadfully boring (it's about book authentication, which is about as exciting as copy editing, even if it's the Devil's copy), Polanski manages to evoke a mood sorely lacking from the Ron Howard/Dan Brown movies.
It's ultimately a failure, but an interesting one, with great atmosphere.
